At St John Fisher, we believe that every child is uniquely gifted and that Art and Design provides a powerful means for pupils to discover and express their God-given talents. Through creativity and imagination, children explore their thoughts and feelings, responding to the wonder and beauty of God’s creation.

Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong appreciation of art while nurturing each child’s ability to create with confidence and purpose. We introduce pupils to a rich variety of artistic styles, techniques, and cultural influences—celebrating how art reflects and shapes our history, heritage, and identity.

We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Produce imaginative and original artwork, expressing their ideas and experiences
  • Develop proficiency in drawing, painting, sculpture, and a range of artistic techniques
  • Evaluate and reflect on their own work and that of others using the language of art and design
  • Learn about influential artists, craft makers, and designers, understanding the cultural and historical contexts of their work

Art and Design is woven into our topic-based curriculum, supporting learning in subjects such as History, Geography, and Science. Lessons are carefully planned to deepen understanding of key themes while encouraging children to make connections and apply their learning creatively across the curriculum.

Beyond the classroom, wider artistic experiences are offered to broaden pupils’ cultural horizons and build the cultural capital needed to thrive beyond primary school. Through the integration of SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) education, children gain insight into diverse cultures and appreciate how global artistic traditions have shaped modern British identity.

Our ultimate goal is to inspire thoughtful, creative, and respectful individuals—responsible stewards of creation who are prepared to contribute positively to the world as global citizens.

Our Art Subject Leader is Miss C Porter-Smith.
