At St John Fisher RC Primary School, it is our mission to nurture and develop the whole child so that each unique child of God grows in confidence, self-esteem, and is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to reach their full potential.
Religious Education (RE) is at the heart of all we do—truly the “core of the core curriculum.” It plays a central role in the spiritual, moral, academic, and personal formation of every pupil, supporting our mission to help children discern the meaning and purpose of their lives within the light of faith.
Through our RE curriculum, rooted in the Religious Education Curriculum Directory, we aim to:
- Present the Catholic faith in a way that is comprehensive, engaging, and relevant to children’s lives
- Enable pupils to deepen their religious and theological understanding and express their faith with confidence
- Teach the Church’s moral and social teachings authentically, helping pupils to reflect on and respond to contemporary issues with a Christian worldview
- Foster respect and understanding of other faiths and religious traditions
- Encourage children to connect their faith to their daily lives and to other areas of the curriculum
- Inspire personal reflection, spiritual growth, and a deepening of faith and understanding
- Support pupils in exploring the relationship between faith and culture, and between faith and life itself
Our intention is for all pupils to become religiously literate and spiritually engaged. They will use their knowledge, understanding, and skills to think ethically and theologically, to reflect deeply, and to act with compassion and integrity.
We aim for children to develop notable independence in their learning—able to think critically and creatively, draw their own conclusions, and apply what they have learned to their own lives. Our pupils are encouraged to be curious, reflective, and joyful learners who embrace the challenge of learning and seek meaning in all that they do.
Through Religious Education at St John Fisher, we prepare children not only to succeed academically but also to grow in faith, wisdom, and love—ready to live out their vocation as thoughtful, active, and compassionate citizens in today’s world.

Religious Education
Our Vision
At St John Fisher RC Primary School, Religious Education is at the heart of everything we do. We believe every child is created in the image and likeness of God and is called to flourish spiritually, morally, intellectually, emotionally and socially.
Religious Education is the core of our curriculum and underpins the prayer life, liturgy and Catholic Life of our school. Through our curriculum and daily experiences, we help children encounter Christ, deepen their faith, develop religious literacy and live out the Gospel values in their everyday lives.
Our Curriculum
Our Religious Education curriculum follows the Religious Education Directory (RED, 2023) using the Diocese of Salford’s recommended resource, Lighting the Path.
Learning is organised through six Curriculum Branches:
· Creation and Covenant
· Prophecy and Promise
· Galilee to Jerusalem
· Desert to Garden
· To the Ends of the Earth
· Dialogue and Encounter
Children develop their understanding through the four Knowledge Lenses of Hear, Believe, Celebrate and Live, while growing in the three Ways of Knowing: Understand, Discern and Respond.
Prayer and Liturgy
Prayer and worship are central to school life. Children participate in daily prayer, Celebration of the Word, Masses, liturgical celebrations and opportunities for reflection throughout the Church’s year. These experiences nurture faith and encourage a personal relationship with God.
Dialogue and Encounter
Through the curriculum, pupils learn about Christianity and other faiths, including Judaism, Islam and Dharmic religions. We promote respect, understanding and appreciation of diversity, preparing children to live confidently and compassionately in modern Britain.
Living the Gospel
Religious Education extends beyond the classroom through acts of service, charitable fundraising, Catholic Social Teaching and opportunities for pupil leadership. Children are encouraged to recognise the dignity of every person and to contribute positively to both the Church and the wider community.
At St John Fisher RC Primary School, Religious Education forms the foundation of our school community, inspiring children to grow in faith, knowledge and love as compassionate, responsible and faithful citizens.
At St John Fisher, we teach pupils to have a mutual respect and an understanding of the various faiths
and beliefs.
Autumn Homework projects encourage children in KS2 to research various aspects of other world faiths:
Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam
Areas of Research are as follows:
Year Three ‘Places of Worship’
Year Four ‘Holy Books’
Year Five ‘Beliefs and Festivals’
Year Six ‘Values’
In Year 4, children gain knowledge and understanding about aspects of Judaism through the Come
and See programme. All children will learn aspects of Islam during one week in the summer term.
