At St John Fisher, we believe that through the teaching of Mathematics, children can experience the beauty, awe, wonder, and complexity of God’s world. Mathematics is not just a subject—it is a way of understanding and exploring the world around us. We aim to help every child recognise how maths is deeply connected to everyday life and to all areas of learning.
Our intention is to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills they need to become confident, fluent, and curious mathematicians. Through carefully structured lessons, children develop the ability to reason, solve problems, and make connections across mathematical concepts. By practising these skills over time, they are supported in achieving mastery.
In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to develop children’s understanding in the following key areas:
- Number and Place Value
- Addition & Subtraction (mental and written methods)
- Multiplication & Division (mental and written methods)
- Fractions
- Ratio & Proportion
- Algebra – including formulae and solving problems with missing numbers
- Measurement – including mass, volume, capacity, and time
- Geometry – properties of shapes, position, direction, and movement
- Statistics – interpreting and presenting data using diagrams, charts, and graphs
We aim to ensure all children:
- Develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through the use of concrete resources, visual representations, and abstract thinking
- Reason mathematically using precise vocabulary and logical strategies
- Confidently approach mathematical investigations and problem-solving tasks, explaining their thinking with clarity and accuracy
Our mathematics curriculum not only meets academic goals but also supports children in developing resilience, perseverance, and a growth mindset. By fostering a love of maths, we prepare our pupils to use their mathematical knowledge with purpose and confidence in the wider world.
Through the lens of faith, we help children see the order, structure, and creativity of God’s creation reflected in the patterns and logic of mathematics. It is our hope that all children leave St John Fisher with the mathematical skills, confidence, and curiosity to thrive in the next stage of their learning—and beyond.
