At St John Fisher RC Primary School, we are committed to nurturing and developing the whole child so that each unique child of God grows in confidence and is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and self-esteem to achieve their full potential.
Through the teaching of Science, we aim to spark curiosity and a sense of wonder about God’s world. Our goal is to develop children into thoughtful, inquisitive young scientists who care for the environment, question what they observe, and seek to understand the world around them—both today and in the future.
In line with the National Curriculum, we ensure that all pupils:
- Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding in the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics
- Understand the nature, processes, and methods of science through practical investigations and enquiry
- Are equipped with the knowledge to understand how science impacts our lives and the wider world—now and for generations to come
We believe that Science should be meaningful and relevant. Children are encouraged to explore real-world issues and to reflect on the implications of scientific discovery in local, national, and global contexts.
Science at St John Fisher is also a vehicle for developing SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) understanding. We help children to recognise the interconnectedness of all life and their responsibility as stewards of creation, encouraging them to think ethically, act responsibly, and understand their place in a global community.
Wider curriculum experiences—including educational visits, STEM projects, and cross-curricular links—help to enrich learning and foster a love of discovery. These experiences also help build the cultural capital children need to thrive beyond primary education.
Our ultimate intention is for pupils to leave St John Fisher with a deep respect for the natural world, the confidence to question and explore, and the scientific understanding to help make a positive difference in the world as caring, knowledgeable, and responsible global citizens.
Our Science Subject Leader is Mrs A Yerby.
