It is our intention that through the teaching of Design and Technology children we can nurture creativity, allowing children to discover their God-given talents as they explore the designed world in which we live and begin to understand their place in it. We aim to provide opportunities for our children to acquire appropriate Design and Technology knowledge and skills and then provide them with opportunities to practice and apply them over time, in order to master them.
In line with the national curriculum expectations for Design and Technology we aim to ensure that all pupils:
• Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
• Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
• Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
• Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook. A topic-based curriculum, with History, Geography and Science as the main drivers, aims to support children’s deeper understanding of the content being taught so that they are able to transfer what they have learnt from one subject to the next.
Focused teaching of related concepts threading through the curriculum encourages children to transfer their learning to new contexts. Wider curriculum experiences linked to Design and Technology aim to instil a love of learning and provide children with the cultural capital that they will need to succeed in their lives beyond primary education. SMSC education is threaded through the teaching of Design and Technology so that children can gain an understanding of people from different cultural backgrounds and realise how other cultures have had a major impact on the development of ’British’ culture today. It is our intention that children develop the necessary Design and Technology knowledge and skills and respectful attitudes to become educated and caring future global citizens, i.e. responsible stewards of creation who will strive to make a positive difference.
Our Design Technology Subject Leader is Miss C Porter-Smith.
