At St John Fisher, we are committed to nurturing the whole child so that each unique child of God can grow in confidence and flourish. Through our English curriculum, we aim to equip pupils with the essential skills in reading, writing, and spoken language so they can communicate effectively and participate fully in society.
We believe that a strong foundation in English empowers children to express themselves, understand others, and engage meaningfully with the world around them. In line with the National Curriculum, we ensure that all pupils:
- Read fluently, with understanding and enjoyment
- Develop a love of reading for pleasure and information
- Build a broad vocabulary and a secure understanding of grammar
- Appreciate our rich and diverse literary heritage
- Write clearly, accurately, and for a range of purposes and audiences
- Use discussion to deepen understanding and articulate ideas confidently
- Speak and listen with clarity in a range of formal and informal settings
Through the teaching of English, our pupils learn to communicate their ideas and emotions clearly, while developing the ability to listen, reflect, and respond to others. We explore a wide range of texts to enhance SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural) education, helping children connect with diverse perspectives and understand their role in a global community.
Our English curriculum also supports pupils in developing a strong sense of identity, empathy, and social responsibility. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of reading and learning, while providing the cultural capital needed for future success in education and beyond.
Ultimately, it is our intention that children leave St John Fisher as confident, articulate, and thoughtful individuals—responsible stewards of creation who seek to make a positive difference in the world.
Our English Subject Leader is Mrs D Hunt.
