At St John Fisher, it is our intention that through the teaching of Geography, all children will encounter the beauty, awe, and wonder of God’s creation and develop a deep understanding of their place within it. We aim to inspire curiosity about the world and equip children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become responsible global citizens.
Our Geography curriculum provides meaningful opportunities for children to explore the diverse physical and human features of our planet. By building knowledge progressively and practising key skills over time, pupils grow in confidence and mastery.
In line with the National Curriculum, we ensure all children:
- Develop a strong understanding of significant global locations and the physical and human characteristics that define them
- Understand key geographical processes and how they shape our world, including the interdependence of people, places, and environments
- Become skilled in collecting, analysing, and communicating data through hands-on fieldwork experiences
- Learn to interpret a variety of geographical sources such as maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs, and digital tools
Geography is a key driver in our topic-based curriculum, supporting cross-curricular links with subjects such as History and Science. Concepts are carefully revisited and built upon, enabling children to make connections and apply their learning in new contexts.
Wider curriculum experiences, including outdoor learning and fieldwork, help to develop cultural capital and foster a lasting love of learning. Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) education—along with our theological teachings—is interwoven throughout our Geography curriculum. This supports children in becoming thoughtful, compassionate individuals who understand our shared responsibility for the Earth and the wellbeing of all people.
Through the study of Geography, we aim to nurture knowledgeable, respectful, and proactive future citizens—faithful stewards of God’s creation—who are prepared to make a positive difference in their communities and the wider world.
Our Geography Subject Leader is Mrs A Yerby (Covering Maternity Leave of Mrs L Roden).
