At St John Fisher, we aim to nurture the whole child so that each unique child of God can grow in confidence and flourish. Through the teaching of French, we provide children with the foundation for learning additional languages and open the door to new cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking.

Learning French enriches our curriculum by offering excitement, challenge, and enjoyment for both pupils and teachers. It fosters curiosity and helps to develop positive attitudes towards language learning that can last a lifetime.

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written French from a variety of authentic sources
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and accuracy, including asking and answering questions and holding short conversations
  • Write for different purposes and audiences, using a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Explore and appreciate stories, songs, and texts in French, developing a broader cultural awareness

Our goal is to create a school community that embraces the value of languages and where children have regular opportunities to learn about different cultures—both within our school and in the wider world. Through learning French, children begin to understand and relate to others from different backgrounds, nurturing empathy and respect.

Cultural experiences linked to French are woven throughout the curriculum, helping pupils gain valuable cultural capital and a deeper understanding of their own identity and community. By exploring another language and culture, children not only expand their worldview but also grow as compassionate, respectful, and informed global citizens.

Ultimately, it is our intention that children leave St John Fisher with the language knowledge, intercultural understanding, and values needed to make a positive difference—as responsible stewards of God’s creation in an increasingly connected world.

Our MFL Subject Leader is Mrs C Davies.
