At St John Fisher, we are committed to nurturing the whole child so that each unique child of God grows in confidence, self-esteem, and the knowledge and skills needed to reach their full potential. Music plays a vital role in this journey, offering a powerful way for children to express their faith, connect with others, and foster wellbeing.
Our Music curriculum is designed to be accessible to all pupils, providing rich opportunities for creativity, expression, and personal growth. Music helps promote positive mental health, build social cohesion, and enhance academic achievement—all while being an enjoyable and meaningful part of school life.
We aim to ensure that every child:
- Develops an appreciation of music from a wide range of cultures, styles, genres, and historical periods—including Western Classical Music, Popular Music, and Traditional Music from around the world
- Builds a broad aural repertoire through active listening to recommended pieces
- Has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and develop skills in composition
- Learns to sing with confidence, both individually and as part of a group
- Gains confidence in performing on stage, learning how to engage an audience, respect fellow performers, and respond to applause with grace
In line with the National Curriculum, we ensure that all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music across a range of periods, genres, styles, and traditions, including the works of great composers and musicians
- Learn to sing, compose, and create music—both independently and collaboratively—with opportunities to use instruments and technology
- Understand how music is created, produced, and communicated through the inter-related dimensions of pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and notation
Our Music curriculum is rooted in joy, creativity, and expression. We want children to leave St John Fisher with a deep appreciation for music, a strong sense of self-belief, and the cultural capital they need to succeed in life. Above all, we aim to inspire children to share their God-given talents and become thoughtful, expressive individuals who use music to connect with the world and make a positive difference.
Our Music Subject Leader is Mrs C Davies.
