At St John Fisher RC Primary School, the intention of our RSE curriculum is to ensure that children have the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and enable them to engage in, and manage, healthy relationships, now and in the future.

It is our intention to nurture and develop the whole child so that each unique child of God grows in confidence and has the knowledge, skills and self-esteem to achieve their full potential. Through the teaching of our bespoke PSHE curriculum (including Relationship and Health Education (RHE), SMSC Education and British Values Education) we want our children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. We strive to provide learning opportunities and experiences which reflect the increasing independence and physical and social awareness of children as they move through the primary phase. We want our children to learn skills to develop effective relationships and assume greater personal responsibility to keep themselves healthy and safe. In line with the national expectations for Relationship Education, it is our intention that children are taught to understand the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults. We want children to understand the knowledge outlined in the RHE document explored through the following themes: Families and people who care for me, Caring friendships, Respectful relationships, Online relationships and Being safe. In line with the national expectations for Health Education, we aim to teach children about physical health and mental wellbeing and to give them the information that they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing. We want children to recognise what is normal and what is an issue in themselves and others and, when issues arise, know how to seek support as early as possible from appropriate sources. We want children to understand the knowledge outlined in the RHE document explored through the following themes: Mental wellbeing, Internet safety and harms, Physical health and fitness and Healthy eating. Although not yet statutory, we aim to teach children about economic wellbeing and provide careers and enterprise education which we consider to be vital parts of the school’s PSHE curriculum. It is our intention that wider curriculum experiences linked to PSHE will enable pupils to make active and positive contributions to their school and wider community. Through PSHE teaching, we want our children to become educated and caring future global citizens, i.e. responsible stewards of creation who will strive to make a positive difference.
